During Northside Festival from June 8-11, TNT will open the doors of the Backstory Studio at Kinfolk 90, bringing engaging and unexpected drama to the center of all the festival action.

The TNT Backstory Studio will open to the public during the day, providing a place for visitors to hang out and grab a coffee and bite – plus first-hand access to a variety of emerging creators and artists who will share their unique stories with visitors through performance, food, music, fashion and art each day.

Northside Festival badge holders will have exclusive access to special events during the evenings. Check out the daily schedules to see what’s happening at the Backstory Studio:

THURSDAY JUNE 8th:

School’s out! Kids and families are invited to Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH), where Harmonica Sunbeam will read a favorite story and then lead a fun arts & crafts project.

STORYTELLING WORKSHOP WITH LEMON ANDERSEN AND FEATURING JASMINE CEPHAS JONES

Lemon Andersen is a Brooklyn-born and raised poet, playwright, spoken word artist, actor and TV writer. His eclectic credits range from Tony Award winner to “most aired episodes on HBO’s Def Poetry” to Baryshnikov Arts Center Resident Artist. He will lead a one-hour workshop on writing and developing strong characters in dramatic storytelling that will be inspired by TNT’s new series, Claws. The workshop will feature a reading by Jasmine Cephas Jones, who played the roles of Maria Reynolds and Peggy Schuyler as part of the original cast of Hamilton.

BROOKLYN MAGAZINE EMERGING BANDS SHOWCASE: SNEAKS

Daily showcase curated by Brooklyn Magazine to shine a spotlight on emerging bands and artists. Thursday’s showcase will feature Sneaks a.k.a. Eva Moolchan, whose new album ‘It’s A Myth’ was released by Merge Records earlier this year. With little more than a bass, drum machine, and deadpan vocals, Sneaks makes minimalist music that takes up space.

PERFORMANCE BY THE DRUNK SHAKESPEARE SOCIETY

To celebrate their new series, Will, TNT presents a special performance by Drunk Shakespeare. Five professional actors meet as members of “The Drunk Shakespeare Society”, and one of them downs at least five shots of whiskey before over-confidently attempting to perform a major role in a Shakespearean play. Hilarity and mayhem ensues while the four sober actors try and keep the script on track. Every show is different depending on who is drinking… and what they’re drinking! Space is limited. Entry is 21+

Legendary NY nightlife DJ Michael T will open and close the evening with his glam rock beats.

Max Steiner is a Brooklyn-born jewelry designer, sculptor, product designer, and 3d modeler who always infuses theatricality into his work. Fashion designers and costumers have been clamoring to work with him and his handmade, lasercut masks. Look for his collaboration with Little Cinema at the Friday night screening.

Fashion designer Emma Berg designs each of her collections with  “a story that goes beyond the hem and sleeve, something that further inspires to celebrate what you love and work to change what you don’t. To become active. To learn. To become involved.” She’ll be demonstrating how she makes her feminist aprons with delicate sequins.

YUM’S THE WORD SHOW

Yum’s the Word is the only storytelling show that blends old-school fun with modern-day storytelling. Join host, Robin Gelfenbien, and some of New York City’s best storytellers, comedians and writers for funny true stories, Mad Libs, games and Robin’s world-famous homemade ice cream cakes. Yum’s The Word has been featured in Bon Appetit, Time Out NY, and CBS New York.

FIRESIDE CHAT WITH FEMINIST FIGHT CLUB AUTHOR JESSICA BENNETT

Jessica Bennett is an award-winning journalist and critic who writes on gender, sexuality and culture. She is a contributing writer at the New York Times, where she has covered sexual assault on campus, spent time with Hillary Clinton’s childhood friends, and was the first journalist to profile Monica Lewinsky in a decade. She is the author of Feminist Fight Club: A Survival Manual for a Sexist Workplace, which has been called “engaging, practical and hilarious” by Sheryl Sandberg and “a classic fuck-you feminist battle guide” by Ilana Glazer.

LIVE WITH GLYNN WASHINGTON OF SNAP JUDGMENT

Join Glynn Washington, host and executive producer, of hit NPR show Snap Judgment for some crazy, true stories. Before creating Snap Judgment, Glynn worked as an educator, diplomat, community activist, actor, political strategist, fist-shaker, mountain-hollerer, and foot stomper. Glynn composed music for the Kunst Stoff dance performances in San Francisco, rocked live spoken word poetry in Detroit, joined a band in Indonesia, wrote several screenplays, painted a daring series of self portraits, released a blues album, and thinks his stories are best served with cocktails.

Daily showcase curated by Brooklyn Magazine to shine a spotlight on emerging bands and artists. Friday’s showcase will feature New York- and Seoul-based Kathy Yaeji Lee. Pitchfork called her “one of the most fascinating vocalists to appear in house music of late” and said, “her languid debut EP is full of elliptical earworms. Singing in Korean and English, she sounds both smoky and bubbly—languid in mood, but fast-paced in her inflection.”

TNT joins forces with Little Cinema for a new immersive, cinematic show that brings to life content from premiere episodes of TNT’s new original summer series – Animal Kingdom, Claws and Will. Exclusive to Northside Festival, the show will infuse some of New York City’s top performing artists into a live audio-visual spectacle full of dance, acrobatics, aerialists, special effects and emotion. ARTIST STUDIO

Artist/musician Lea Thomas’s deep love for the wild and weathered is evident in all she creates, from textiles woven on a home loom her songs. Raised in Maui and now based in Brooklyn, she tells stories that explore emotional landscapes as mirrored by the physical terrains of our environment. She’ll be displaying her beautiful work and giving weaving demos.

Lizzi Reid became obsessed with skating right after art school…and she combines her passions by painting on skate decks. She’s also a role model for other girls, teaching them to be confident on and off the ramp at Skate Yogi. (Sidenote: Her punk band, Witch Slap, is also performing at Northside Festival!)

Gina Schiappacasse is a Brooklyn based illustrator, designer, and stylist. When not pursuing her own creative projects, Gina works as a producer and in-house illustrator for Hairstory, the burgeoning new hair-centric studio from Bumble & bumble’s founder Michael Gordon. Her just-released fashion coloring book will be available for purchase.

RUNSTREET ART RUN + BRUNCH SPONSORED BY LUNA

Runstreet, led by RRCA-certified running coach Marnie Kunz, is a NYC-based running and fitness events group that offers NYC street art running tours. Runners will run along the Williamsburg Walk on Bedford Ave. and finish with brunch at the TNT Backstory Studio.

Brunch by Palak Patel – chef, TV personality, writer and one of the food industry’s newest and sassiest rising stars, gaining critical acclaim from victories in famed shows like  Chopped  and  Beat Bobby Flay on  Food Network.

The brunch will end with a live interview with Chef Patel and Heritage Radio Network’s Snacky Tunes. Every Sunday, Snacky Tunes co-hosts Darin and Greg Bresnitz–brothers since birth, dance music DJ partners, dim sum lovers and whiskey aficionados–explore and celebrate the cultural convergence of music and food.

Marco With Love’s Cosmic American country fried boogie-woogie Rock ‘N’ Roll has a vibrant sound that gives a nod to influences such as The Flying Burrito Brothers, Tom Petty, The Byrds, and The Traveling Wilburys. The band has been touring behind their 2016 release “Smothered & Covered,” playing successful shows throughout NYC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, London and beyond.
