Whenever I read an artist list The Gun Club as an influence, I’m always like yeah yeah yeah whatever ok cool. Turns out those lists aren’t always reserved for jerking off your idols. Benjamin Booker has blues roots both traditional and non, culling the vibe of his native New Orleans and marrying it to a penchant for punk. You can feel the latter in certain moments of “Violent Shiver,” when it feels like Booker wants to ditch the guitar and buttery vocals for a nice, long shriek. It makes for an exciting track, with triumphant drums and a chorus that echoes “Dog Days Are Over” at times (… I know, but it works). His debut 7” is out in May on ATO/Rough Trade, with a full-length due in fall. Until then, you can find him opening for Courtney Barnett at Northside in June.
