Add another case to the Leeds file. Eagulls have landed, and they’ve brought with them the British suburban misery punk that Robert Smith wrote home about. True to form, muddled lyrics add to the overall guitars and gloom of a track like “Tough Luck,” a charmer in spite of itself. The melody finds steady backing in the drums, which clamor out of the grey every now and then to keep things pounding. It’s all the eighties you wanted and none of the shitty eyeliner. Eagulls is out now on Partisan.
